AEW’s New Tag Team Champions Have A Long History You Didn’t Know About

New AEW Tag Team Champions Brody King & Bandido on Their Long Friendship and Title Win

Following their victory in the three-way match for the AEW World Tag Team Championship at Forbidden Door, the new champions, Brody King and Bandido, spoke with the media about their win, the origins of their team, and their future as champions. AEW President Tony Khan, who was also present, revealed that the chemistry between the two is rooted in a long and storied friendship. Scroll down to watch the video.

An Eight-Year Friendship

When asked how they developed their in-ring chemistry so quickly, Brody King explained that their partnership is far from new. “I mean, our friendship, like Tony said, goes back a long time, about eight years,” King said. “We did the Indies together. He signed to Ring of Honor at the same time together. We went to Japan for the first time together, Australia together. Yeah, lots of history between us. We’ve wrestled a lot with each other. I think the people that you wrestle with a lot, you just naturally know what they do. So you know what fits well together.”

A Gift from a Football Star

During the press conference, Tony Khan presented Bandido with a special gift: a jersey from Raúl Jiménez, a star player for the Fulham Football Club and the Mexican national team. “This is a gift from somebody very, very special in my professional life,” Khan said. “He has scored the most goals of anybody currently playing for the Mexican national team… I’m giving this to somebody important in my life in ROH and now in AEW, too.” An emotional Bandido accepted the gift, speaking in Spanish to thank both Khan and Jiménez.

Message to Future Challengers

With their victory, King and Bandido now sit atop AEW’s competitive tag team division. When asked about potential future challengers, including the newly reunited team of Adam Copeland and Christian Cage, King was direct. “Please,” he said. “I mean, I’ve had my history with Adam Copeland. We’ve had some history with Christian as well. I’d be willing to mix it up with those guys any day of the week. The rest of the AEW tag division is getting stronger and stronger by the day. So anyone that wants to step up, step up.”

On House of Black Teammate Buddy Matthews

King was also asked about his House of Black stablemate, Buddy Matthews, who is currently out with an injury. “I mean, I hope that Buddy is at home healing, and I hope that he is, you know, happy for me,” King responded. “But when the time comes and he comes back, then, you know, we always have the trios titles.”

A “Home Grown” Victory

King concluded by expressing his pride in their victory as two “home grown” AEW talents. “I will say that right now, I think it is really awesome that two AEW home grown guys are now the Tag Team Champions again, and hopefully it stays that way for a while,” he said. Tony Khan echoed this sentiment, stating, “It’s great to see homegrown stars.”
