A video has surfaced online showing WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry performing a casual but incredible feat of strength at a steakhouse. The clip, which has been making the rounds on social media, shows Henry being handed a spoon by his server. He then proceeds to easily twist the metal utensil with his bare hands before handing it back to the amazed server, who is left looking at the mangled piece of silverware in disbelief. Scroll down to watch the video.
This is not the first time Henry has demonstrated his hand strength in a public setting. Seven years ago, during an appearance on ESPN’s “SportsNation,” he performed a similar feat, bending a spoon for the show’s hosts. Within the world of WWE, his strength has been a central part of his character for decades, often demonstrated in memorable on-screen segments. On a 2002 episode of SmackDown, he bent a frying pan with his hands. That same year, he was also shown lifting the back end of a car. Several years later, during an episode of the WWE Network series “Ride Along,” he casually crushed a whole apple with one hand while riding in a car with Chris Jericho.
While these on-screen moments were for entertainment, they are rooted in Henry’s legitimate and historic athletic career. Before ever stepping into a wrestling ring, he was a world-class powerlifter and weightlifter, earning the title of “The World’s Strongest Man” after winning the inaugural Arnold Strongman Classic in 2002. His list of accomplishments in the world of strength sports is extensive.
Henry competed in the Olympic Games as a super-heavyweight weightlifter in both 1992 (Barcelona) and 1996 (Atlanta), serving as the captain of the U.S. team in 1996. Throughout the 1990s, he set numerous junior, American, and world records in both weightlifting and powerlifting. He is the only man in history to have held both the U.S. national championship in weightlifting and powerlifting in the same year. In 1995, he won three medals at the Pan American Games.
His powerlifting records are particularly notable. During his career, he set world records in the squat (953.5 lbs) and the deadlift (903.9 lbs). To this day, he is credited with a drug-tested powerlifting total of 2,336.9 lbs, which remains one of the highest raw totals ever recorded. It was this incredible and proven strength that led WWE to sign him to a then-unprecedented 10-year contract in 1996.
Before focusing on lifting, Henry was also a gifted high school athlete. Standing 6’1″ and weighing over 225 lbs as a freshman, he was a standout on his high school’s football team. He also played on the basketball team, where he was known for his ability to dunk the ball with two hands, a feat he could reportedly perform as early as the seventh grade.
