Kurt Angle and The Undertaker have officially debunked a long-standing rumor that there was a plan for Angle to be the one to end The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania. On the latest episode of “The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under” podcast, the two Hall of Famers set the record straight on the famous “what if” scenario from 2006. The story has been a topic of discussion among fans for nearly two decades, and now the two men at the center of it have provided the definitive truth.
The rumor for years was that Kurt Angle was at one point scheduled to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 22 and that he was going to be the one to end “The Phenom’s” undefeated streak. However, at the very beginning of the podcast, both men wasted no time in shooting down the story. The Undertaker stated that he never wanted the streak to be broken by anyone at that time.
“No, I don’t want anybody to break that. We wanted to wrestle at ‘Mania, but I didn’t want anybody to break the streak,” The Undertaker said. Kurt Angle then corroborated his story, confirming that while they both wanted the match, ending the streak was never part of the plan. He also revealed that it was Vince McMahon who ultimately decided against the match happening at WrestleMania.
“We wanted to wrestle each other… I don’t think the streak should have been broken. We presented it to Vince, and Vince said, ‘No, you’re going to wrestle the month before.’ That’s what he said,” Angle confirmed. His wife, Michelle McCool, could also be heard in the background agreeing with Angle’s comments that the streak should have never been broken at all.
Instead of a WrestleMania showdown, the two legends had their classic encounter for the World Heavyweight Championship at the No Way Out pay-per-view in February 2006. The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania would continue for another eight years, until it was finally broken by Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XXX in 2014.
The full interview with Kurt Angle, where he also discusses his TNA career and the current WWE and TNA partnership, can be heard on “The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under” podcast.
