A new report from Fightful Select gave an update on the status of former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega, who was written off of television at the conclusion of last week’s AEW Dynamite. The report noted that Omega is taking a planned break from the company, which will include a trip to Japan. The storyline angle that saw him taken out on a stretcher was a pre-planned way to explain his absence. This news comes after Omega returned from a career-threatening illness.
The storyline exit for Omega took place after the main event of this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. Kyle Fletcher attacked Omega, delivering a brainbuster through a table. Omega was then stretchered out of the arena. This angle was designed to write him off of television so he could take his planned time away from the ring to rest and handle other commitments.
The initial report from Fightful Select stated that Omega was taking “time off” and that his absence would include the upcoming All Out pay-per-view. Omega himself took to Twitter to respond to the report, taking issue with the phrasing while confirming his absence. “Time off? Specialized hospital visits and work that had been planned for a year, but sure, let’s bait the trolls,” Omega wrote. “I’m just trying to improve what I can and represent the company in a positive way while not performing. Don’t be misleading with headlines, please and thank you.”
The “work that had been planned for a year” that Omega referenced appears to be an appearance at the Tokyo Game Show, according to the Fightful report. It is currently unknown when the former AEW World Champion will make his return to All Elite Wrestling.
Omega’s time away comes after a grueling schedule that saw him compete in ten matches since his return, ending in the brutal ten-man Lights Out Steel Cage match in the main event of the Forbidden Door pay-per-view. It was also recently reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Omega has been “battling very serious pain.”
