Injured WWE superstar Kevin Owens made a surprise appearance for the independent promotion Green Mountain Wrestling, opening their recent show with a special video message from his home. In the video, Owens, using his real name, Kevin Steen, shared his regret that he could not be there in person and congratulated the promotion on crowning its first-ever champion.
In the video, which was shared on social media by the promotion, Owens introduced himself as Kevin Steen, a nod to his long and celebrated career on the independent circuit before he signed with WWE. He explained that he would have loved to have been at the show in Vermont in person to present the championship belt to the winner of their tournament. “Moonlight Son” Mike Skyros would go on to become the first-ever GMW Champion.
He also noted that he has been following the promotion for some time and has been excited to see its growth. The appearance is a sign of the new, more collaborative era in WWE under the leadership of Paul “Triple H” Levesque, which has seen the company form partnerships with a number of other promotions, including TNA, as well as letting stars appear at selective events outside of WWE.
Owens has been out of action since April of this year, when he announced that he had to undergo neck surgery. He has been providing occasional updates on his recovery. In a recent media appearance, he confirmed that the surgery was a “best-case scenario” and that he is hoping to be back in the ring within the next year.
GMW is set to have a collaboration show with GCW in Vermont on November 9. We wish him a speedy recovery. The full video of Kevin Owens’s message to Green Mountain Wrestling can be found on their official social media accounts.
