Original: The dream of one last match between John Cena and AJ Styles is one step closer to reality. After John Cena took to social media to publicly lobby for a final encounter with his former rival, “The Phenomenal One” has officially responded and accepted the challenge. The exchange, which has played out on X, has ignited the WWE fanbase, which has been clamoring for the two stars to share the ring one more time as part of Cena’s ongoing retirement tour.
While WWE has yet to make the match official, the public back-and-forth between the two future Hall of Famers suggests that an announcement could be imminent. The social media campaign began on Monday night when Cena posted a simple yet effective message: “#CenavsStyles Thoughts? #WWERaw.”
He followed that up on Tuesday morning with a more direct post, putting the ball in the court of both Styles and WWE management. “I do not choose my opponents, but I (even through tough times) ALWAYS listen to the fans,” Cena wrote. “@AJStylesOrg are you listening? Better yet @TripleH….. are YOU listening???” It did not take long for Styles to respond. Quoting Cena’s tweet, Styles wrote, “It would be my honor.”
The potential match would be a fitting addition to Cena’s farewell tour, which has seen him pay homage to many of his greatest rivals. Their series of matches in 2016 and 2017 are widely regarded as some of the best of the last decade, including a classic bout at the 2017 Royal Rumble where Cena defeated Styles to capture his record-tying 16th world championship.
With only five dates remaining on Cena’s retirement schedule, fans were beginning to worry that a final chapter in their iconic rivalry would not come to pass, but the new social media exchange has renewed hope. With John Cena advertised for the upcoming WWE Crown Jewel premium live event in Perth, Australia on October 11, and no opponent yet named for him, speculation is running rampant that the match will be made official for that show.
The other remaining dates on Cena’s tour include two appearances on Raw in November, the Survivor Series premium live event on November 29, and his final scheduled match at a Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
I hear them loud and clear. Let's do it, I'm ready! https://t.co/8U1VxaHn3R
