The cross-promotional war between WWE NXT and TNA is just getting started, and a legendary tag team with deep ties to both companies could be getting involved. According to a new report from Fightful Select, The Hardy Boyz (Matt and Jeff Hardy) have been pitched to appear as part of the ongoing invasion storyline.
The angle, which saw a large group of TNA talent invade NXT this past Tuesday, is reportedly planned to be a long-term program. The inclusion of one of the most decorated tag teams in history would add another layer of star power to the angle. There are extended plans for the storyline to continue well past TNA’s upcoming Bound For Glory pay-per-view. It was pointed out that TNA has no television tapings scheduled immediately after the October event, but does have a November taping listed for Orlando without a specific venue.
Fightful was told this is not an accident and that fans should not be surprised to see “something unconventional or different” for TNA’s television production following the pay-per-view. The speculation is that the tapings could potentially take place at the WWE Performance Center. There is also an expectation for an “accelerated NXT presence on WWE programming,” which indicates the invasion could soon spill over from TNA and NXT to Raw and SmackDown.
The Hardy Boyz are currently in their third reign as the TNA World Tag Team Champions, having recently returned to the promotion where they experienced a career resurgence between 2014 and 2017. It was in TNA that Matt Hardy first debuted his revolutionary “Broken” character, a bizarre and highly entertaining persona that, along with his brother, “Brother Nero” (Jeff Hardy), led to the creation of the cinematic “Broken Universe.”
This run, which included famous segments like “The Final Deletion,” was a creative success, revitalizing their careers and making them one of the hottest acts in all of professional wrestling. The duo is also one of the only teams in history to have held tag team championships in WWE, WCW, TNA, and ROH.
The initial invasion on NXT featured several familiar faces, but the Fightful Select report also mentioned that there were some notable names left off and that “there were some talent that WWE preferred to not have featured.” The potential involvement of The Hardy Boyz, who are not only TNA champions but also beloved WWE legends, would be a massive addition to the storyline.
