The Miz Was Supposed To Be First Failed WWE Money In The Bank Cash-In

On the Unlikely podcast, The Miz took a look back at his first Money in the Bank briefcase win and cash-in to become WWE Champion, revealing that the original creative plan was for him to make history in a very different way. According to The Miz, he was originally slated to be the first superstar to ever unsuccessfully cash in the contract.

“I was the guy that was going to cash in and lose. That was just my trajectory, the first time, the first person to ever cash in and lose,” The Miz explained. “That’s something that The Miz would do, that is that character, that is what would happen.”

However, plans changed on the day of the show. “That day I walked in, I remember sitting down and hearing, ‘You’re going over tonight.’ ‘Wait what?’ ‘You’re winning the WWE Championship.’ And by the way, this is close, not close, but close enough to WrestleMania,” he recalled.

The moment he defeated Randy Orton for the title remains a career highlight. “I remember cashing in. I remember going out, and I remember going up against Randy Orton and beating Randy Orton, and I remember just all the emotions that fulfill you,” he said. “I remember tears kind of, but I was like, ‘Nah, I can’t let tears out because I’m a man and I’m a WWE Champion, and I can’t be crying.’ But it was a cool, surreal moment that you can’t explain.”

The Miz cashed in his contract on the November 22, 2010, episode of Monday Night Raw. His successful cash-in led to a WWE Championship reign that saw him defeat John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 27. The unfortunate distinction of being the first to fail a cash-in would later go to Damien Sandow in 2013.
