The Miz: I Was “Very Angry That It’s AJ Styles Vs. John Cena And Not John Cena Vs. The Miz”

During a recent appearance on the Unlikely podcast, The Miz did not hold back his frustration and anger over not being included in John Cena’s ongoing retirement tour. Upon learning that one of Cena’s final matches would be against AJ Styles, The Miz expressed his disappointment at being overlooked despite his storied history with the 17-time world champion.

John Cena’s retirement tour is set to conclude in December 2025. Cena vs. Styles has been booked for Crown Jewel. “I’ll tell you what. I’ll tell you backstage, I was happy for AJ Styles, but very angry that it’s AJ Styles versus John Cena and not John Cena versus The Miz,” he stated.

The former WWE Champion made his case for why he deserved a spot on the farewell tour, citing his victory over Cena to retain the WWE Title at WrestleMania 27 in 2011. “I beat the guy at WrestleMania in the main event for the WWE Championship, one of the only people ever to do something like that, and I can’t get a match with John Cena. He’s got five dates left,” The Miz said.

He revealed that he had been lobbying for a final match since the tour was first announced. “The audience could say, ‘We want The Miz versus John Cena,’ and I would love to have one more match,” he said. “I’ve been talking about this since the retirement tour started. I was the first person to go sign me up. I’m putting my name in the hat. When’s my number going to get called? Maybe never, because there’s only five left.”

The Miz admitted his feelings were coming from a personal and competitive place. “I was, I’m pretty upset. Like, that’s my heart talking. Selfishly, I want that match.”
