On his Kliq This podcast, Kevin Nash offered a creative critique of AJ Lee’s recent return to WWE, suggesting that the moment would have been more effective if she had presented a completely different, more serious character to match the storyline.
Nash used one of the most famous character shifts in history to make his point. “If you go back in time, the nWo takes off, Hogan drops the leg, and then the next time you see Hulk, he’s still in the yellow and red. Does it work as well as Hollywood? You go with a complete change because now you’ve got some fucking intrigue,” he argued.
He felt that AJ Lee returning with her signature skipping entrance didn’t fit the narrative of her coming to the aid of her husband, CM Punk. “The reason she’s coming down is not to make some phony shit wrestling angle. The reason she’s coming down is because another woman is putting her hands on her husband, and he can’t do anything about it,” Nash said.
He then laid out his preferred scenario for the return. “If she would have just stormed down and not even said a word, just went right to her and just pummeled the shit out of her, then if she wants to come out the next week and fucking skip, she can do all she wants. The first time you see her, though, it’s like she just showed up… and then the shit goes down, then she inserts herself. I just think that.”
AJ Lee returned to WWE earlier this month on an episode of SmackDown. The appearance was her first in a WWE ring in over a decade and set up a mixed tag team match for the Crown Jewel premium live event in November. Lee and Punk went over in the bout.
