AEW has reportedly made a creative change, delaying a match between Kenny Omega and Kyle Fletcher due to concerns over Omega’s physical condition. According to a new report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision was made because Omega is “not 100 percent,” and the feeling within the company was that he would not be able to deliver the match that would be expected of him against a performer like Fletcher.
Instead of proceeding with this match, AEW has pivoted to a new program for Omega, which began with an attack by the returning Andrade on the sixth-anniversary episode of AEW Dynamite. The storyline between Omega and Fletcher has been building for weeks. As a key member of the Don Callis Family, Fletcher has been a thorn in the side of Omega.
The company has chosen to go in a different direction for now. “There is a reason that right now they aren’t going to do the match, as basically in a normal situation that would have been the match booked but Omega’s physical situation is not 100 percent and the feeling was it was better right now not to put Omega in the situation of the kind of a match he’d be expected to do with Fletcher,” Meltzer wrote.
Instead of a program with Fletcher, Kenny Omega is now in a new feud with Andrade, who made his surprise return to AEW by attacking Omega and aligning himself with the Don Callis Family. This pivot allows AEW to continue Omega’s story with the faction while giving him an opponent that may allow for a different style of match as he continues to recover physically.
Kenny Omega has been battling a number of injuries over the past few years, including a bout with diverticulitis that kept him out of action for a significant portion of 2024. He worked a trios bout on this week’s Dynamite before the attack angle.
