In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Kurt Angle, one of the most acclaimed technical wrestlers in history, named his choice for the greatest of all time and revealed the one dream match he wishes he could have had.
When asked about his preferred in-ring style, Angle was clear. “I love technical wrestlers. Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, the technical wrestlers,” he said. “I have to say my best matches were with Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero.”
While he praised his technical peers, he reserved the ultimate honor for “The Heartbreak Kid.” “Shawn, overall, I consider Shawn the greatest ever in the sport, if you’re talking look and promo skills and wrestling ability, everything wrapped into one,” Angle declared. “That guy is perhaps the best of all time.”
As for the one opponent he never got to face, Angle pointed to another master of the craft. “Bret Hart, I would have loved to wrestle Bret,” he said. “He’s my kind of style. That’s my kind of guy that I like to work with. And I think Bret and I would have had a five-star, incredible match.”
Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels created their own five-star classic at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, a match that is still considered one of the greatest in the event’s history.
