JBL: Gunther “Can Carry” The Honor Of John Cena’s Last Match

On his Something to Wrestle With podcast, WWE Hall of Famer JBL gave his full endorsement to the idea of Gunther being John Cena’s final opponent. Reacting to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, JBL stated that “The Ring General” is the perfect choice to receive the immense honor on December 13th at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

“Yes, you need somebody that can carry what he’s going to be given, being that last match, whether he goes over or not,” JBL explained. “That is a huge honor to be Cena’s last opponent. And you’re going to have a lot of equity from Cena transferred into that opponent.”

JBL expressed his confidence that Gunther is the right man for that spot, praising his abilities as a performer. “If Gunther is the guy, Gunther can carry it. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” he said. “That guy is a freaking worker. He’s a great worker. He has a great presence about him. He’s a terrific heel. I think Gunther will be able to do a lot with it, not just have a good match.”

He also spoke on Gunther’s long-term potential, seeing a top-level star, whether he remains a heel or eventually turns babyface. “No doubt about it, there’s going to be a great babyface run in the future… Gunther could be a terrific babyface in the same version of the heel that has gotten him over,” JBL stated. “I think he can stay a heel if he wanted to, which would be hard to do, but I think he also could easily switch to be a babyface in time.”
