Many In People In WWE Expect Former Star To Join AEW

The future of the now-former WWE Superstar Santos Escobar is a hot topic in the wrestling world, and a new report suggests that many within WWE expect him to land in AEW. On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed Escobar’s departure, with Alvarez stating, “He might have already signed with AEW.” While Meltzer could not confirm a signing, he did report that WWE had been anticipating his exit for some time and that many of his former colleagues believe AEW is his likely destination.

“Unless he signed at the last minute, he is done. They’ve been expecting him to leave for some time. They obviously took him away from Angel and Humberto for that very reason—not expecting him to stay—and yeah, he is gone,” Meltzer said. “I do know multiple people there who expect him to go to AEW. I don’t know if he does or he doesn’t. He’s 41 years old. I don’t know. Some people they take, some people they don’t.”

Escobar’s WWE contract officially expired at midnight on Tuesday, making him a free agent. The move was confirmed when his profile was moved to the alumni section of WWE’s website. He had been absent from television for several months, with his last match taking place at the AAA x WWE Worlds Collide event in June. The on-screen reason for his absence was tied to his role in the Latino World Order, but the real reason, it now appears, was his unresolved contract status.

The creative decision to separate him from his Legado Del Fantasma stablemates, Angel and Humberto (Los Garza), is now seen as a clear sign that the company was preparing for his departure. If Santos Escobar does sign with AEW, it would be the latest acquisition for the promotion as Andrade returned last week after his WWE departure.

Before ever joining WWE, Escobar was a star in Mexico, wrestling as El Hijo del Fantasma, and a top attraction in Lucha Underground as King Cuerno. He has held major championships in both AAA and CMLL. A move to AEW would not only provide him with a new platform to showcase his incredible talent but would also open the door for dream matches against new opponents. Additionally, AEW’s policy of allowing its talent to work on the independent circuit would give him the freedom to continue competing in Mexico and around the world.
