The second season of the hit DC series “Peacemaker” has come to an end, and according to showrunner and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, this will be the end of the standalone series, at least for the time being. The season two finale, which dropped on HBO Max today, sets the stage for the show’s characters to continue their stories in other projects across the DC Universe.
While the news that a third season is not immediately planned may be disappointing for fans of the show, Gunn has made it clear that John Cena’s character will remain a vital part of the DCU’s future. Speaking with Deadline ahead of the finale, Gunn was asked if he was planning a third season of the popular show.
“No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.”
The season two finale appeared to set up this transition, with the episode featuring Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, tasking his team with searching a “Quantum Unfolding Chamber” for another dimension to carry out his plans. When asked if fans could expect to see John Cena or other “Peacemaker” stars in upcoming DCU films like “Supergirl” or “Man of Tomorrow,” Gunn remained coy.
“Well, we’ll have to see. That’s a secret.” Gunn also teased that a crossover with another major comic book character almost happened, revealing that Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool nearly made an appearance in the final episode. Check out the full interview here.
