WWE SmackDown Star To Challenge For NXT Title

A championship match has been added to the card for this Saturday’s NXT live event in Cleveland, Ohio, as the reigning North American Champion, Ethan Page, will defend his title against one of the most decorated stars in NXT history, Johnny Gargano. The match was made on Friday night during the NXT house show in Detroit, Michigan, after a backstage brawl between the two men.

The confrontation began after Ethan Page’s victory over TNA star Trey Miguel. Page was in the backstage area bragging about his win when he was confronted by Johnny Gargano. After a brief and insulting exchange, the two men began to brawl and had to be separated by members of the NXT roster. In the aftermath of the fight, “Johnny Wrestling” laid down the challenge for a North American Championship match in his hometown of Cleveland, a challenge that Page seemingly accepted on social media. “I’m not gonna carry your bags, Johnny … but I’ll pack them for you. NXT is my show now,” Page wrote, a clear reference to Gargano’s past nickname for him.

The NXT live event tour has been an eventful one, with a number of happenings taking place on the shows. The Detroit event was headlined by a massive six-man tag team match that saw the new NXT Champion, Ricky Saints, team with Motor City Machine Guns to defeat the trio of Lexis King, Josh Briggs, and former champion Trick Williams.

The show also saw a confrontation between former NXT Champion Oba Femi and the giant Omos, who had also appeared at the previous night’s show in Columbus. The tour has also featured Sol Ruca successfully defending her WWE Speed Women’s Championship against Kendal Grey.
