On the latest episode of his 1 of a Kind podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam shared a stunning story from one of his final runs with WWE, revealing that Randy Orton was legitimately knocked unconscious during one of their matches. RVD explained that he had to carry a concussed Orton through the remainder of the bout.
“This is on my way out from WWE, I guess it’s okay to talk about. But Randy got heat for going on Twitter or something and saying, ‘Thank goodness for Rob carrying me through that match, I was out the whole time,’” RVD revealed.
He recalled the moment the injury happened, which occurred early in the contest. “It was one of the very last ones. Was either a stretcher match or the one right before that, but when he hit the corner post, like, towards the beginning, he was just out,” he said.
RVD noted that in that era, stopping the match was not an option, and it was his responsibility as a professional to see the match through to its conclusion. “Sometimes that happens, and you would never even think about stopping the match,” he stated.
The matches RVD is referencing likely took place during his 2013-2014 WWE run, where he and Orton competed in matches, including a Stretcher Match on an episode of Monday Night Raw.
He continued, “It was one of the very last ones. It was either a stretcher match or the one right before that, but when he hit the corner post, like, towards the beginning and was just out. And, you know, sometimes that happens, and you know, we would never even think about stopping the match.”
