WATCH: The Rock Shares Behind-The-Scenes Look At “Smashing Machine” Transformation

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has given fans a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible process that transformed him into MMA legend Mark Kerr for the film, “The Smashing Machine.” In a new post on his Instagram account, the WWE legend shared time-lapse footage of the four-hour makeup and prosthetic application he underwent every single morning of filming.

“Transformation into The Smashing Machine. 4 hours in the make up chair, every morning. 22 prosthetics (eyes, face, forehead, scars, cauliflower ears, wig),” The Rock wrote in his caption. He explained that the lengthy process was more than just a physical change; it was a crucial part of his method for getting into character. “By the time I got to set, I felt I was already in Mark Kerr’s skin. How he walked, talked, and how he violently, yet tenderly navigated life and dealt with his demons.” He also expressed his deep gratitude for the man whose story he was telling, writing, “I’m forever grateful to Mark for living a life, so we could all feel it.”

The Rock made sure to credit the team of artists who made the transformation possible, thanking Kazuhiro Tsuji, Brooklyn Allen, Glen Griffin, Spring Kun, and Nikki Solow. “The Smashing Machine” tells the story of Mark Kerr’s rise to the top of the MMA world, as well as his struggles with addiction and his personal relationships.

The film has been met with acclaim, with The Rock’s performance in particular being singled out as the best of his career and a legitimate contender for an Academy Award. Unfortunately, the film had a rocky start at the box office.
