A potential new wrinkle has been added to the plans for John Cena’s farewell tour, as a recent report suggests WWE has discussed having the legend win the Intercontinental Championship before he retires. According to the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this title win would come at the expense of Dominik Mysterio at the upcoming Survivor Series event.
The Intercontinental Championship Plan
The report from Dave Meltzer indicates that a specific scenario is being considered for Cena’s remaining matches. “The idea of Cena winning the IC title from Dominik (the match right now is at Survivor Series) and it being in play for the final match with Gunther has been discussed”. This would mean Cena would capture the one championship that has eluded him throughout his career.
A High-Stakes Final Match
Cena’s final opponent has been widely reported to be GUNTHER. A match between Cena and GUNTHER with the Intercontinental Championship at stake would serve as a classic “passing of the torch” moment. The demand for Cena’s final match, scheduled for the December 13 Saturday Night’s Main Event, has been astronomical, with reports earlier this week of over 45,000 people in the virtual ticket queue for an arena that holds roughly a third of that number.
Cena’s farewell tour has been a central focus of WWE programming in 2025, featuring bouts against Randy Orton, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, and a program with Cody Rhodes over the Undisputed WWE Championship. He is coming off a victory over AJ Styles at Crown Jewel and has limited dates remaining on his schedule.
