Santos Escobar may be returning to WWE television on next Monday’s episode of Raw in Anaheim, California. This news follows a period of intense speculation after the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion’s contract expired, leaving him a free agent. This situation has been resolved with a new, lucrative deal.
The report of his return comes from PWInsider.com, which first broke the news of his re-signing earlier this month. Escobar signed a new, lucrative deal with WWE within a day of his previous contract having expired.
The new contract was secured after WWE management took Escobar’s “creative concerns” into consideration. This move ultimately led to a much-improved offer being presented to the star. WWE “considered Escobar’s creative concerns and subsequently made Escobar a sizeably larger offer than any of their previous overtures”. At that point, Escobar agreed to the new terms.
Escobar’s absence from television, with his last televised match occurring in February, had fueled speculation that he was on his way out of the company, especially after reports cited “creative dissatisfaction” as the primary reason for his planned departure. This speculation intensified when his contract officially expired on October 6.
Today, it was reported by PWInsider.com that “Escobar is currently slated to be at this Monday’s Raw taping in Anaheim, CA.” It has not been confirmed that he will be making his return on the show.
Before signing with WWE in 2019, Escobar had a decorated career in Mexico and on the American independent scene, wrestling under a mask as El Hijo del Fantasma. He was a major star in the Lucha Underground promotion, where he was known as King Cuerno. After joining WWE in 2019, he unmasked in NXT and formed the Legado Del Fantasma faction, holding the NXT Cruiserweight Championship for over 300 days. After moving to the main roster, he eventually betrayed his mentor, Rey Mysterio, and reformed Legado Del Fantasma as a heel stable.
