Years after the Nexus faction took WWE by storm, fans have often wondered about a rumored documentary detailing their run. David Otunga, an original member of the group, confirmed the documentary was indeed completed but believes political maneuvering, potentially by John Cena, prevented its release.
Confirmation of the Documentary
Speaking on the Muscle Memory podcast, Otunga stated that a Nexus documentary was made. “Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. We filmed it and everything,” he said.
He revealed that the project was finished, but its release coincided with company layoffs. “It was completed and then it ended up, like they just finished it,” Otunga explained. “I talked to the guy, one of the producers… and literally like the next day, two days later, he got fired. They all got fired. They got let go in COVID.”
Details from the Producer
Otunga shared details from his final conversation with the producer just before the layoffs. “He was like, ‘Yo, the documentary was so good.’ He’s like, ‘It was long, but we had to, they made us edit it down.’ He said he spent a whole day like doing this, got it to where they wanted it,” Otunga recalled.
The producer was apparently impressed with Otunga’s contribution. “He was telling me how fired my part was. He told me my interview was so good, they were saving me for last… I was the main event of the documentary, if you will,” Otunga said.
Why Hasn’t It Aired?
Despite being completed, the documentary never saw the light of day. When asked by the host if there was awkward tension between Nexus members and John Cena following their storylines, Otunga replied, “Always, are you kidding me? Yeah. Of course.”
He then directly linked Cena to the documentary’s disappearance. “Hey, why do you think they never brought the Nexus back? Why do you think they never released the Nexus documentary? John Cena has a lot of pull there,” Otunga stated.
