Kevin Nash discussed the art of being “over” in professional wrestling on the Kliq This podcast, explaining the psychology of entrances and working smart.
Speaking with guest Raven, Nash detailed what it feels like to “maestro” a crowd. He then described what he sees as the three key parts of being a pro wrestler, none of which involve the actual match.
“And I think that’s what I always say, that there are three parts of being a pro wrestler. The first one is when they hear your music and in the crowd, you know, if you’re over the crowd fucking pops, then it’s when they see you, and then it’s when you get in the ring and you fucking you. That’s like the third part of the entrance, you walk down, and then you do whatever you’re going to do, it’s in the corner, or whatever the fuck it is. And it’s just like there’s not a drug that’s been put on this planet that’s higher, that makes you higher than that”.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Nash elaborated on his philosophy of “working smarter, not harder,” and how he critiques modern matches. He even shared an anecdote about what his late friend Scott Hall would have said about a 6’10” man trying to chain wrestle.
“Yeah, to me, it’s like, if you it was always to work smarter, not fucking harder. Yeah, like, I want I watched people like, I watch matches now and I’ll watch, like, not the bullshit flippy flops shit, but actual good chain wrestling. And you always think to yourself, like, it would have taken nothing to fucking be a decent chick. You know, there. Was not because there were no 610 chain wrestlers”.
“And I’m thinking, did I say to myself, Okay, what would Scott Hall save? He was in the car with me. The reason there’s no fucking 610 chain wrestlers is there’s no reason to be a six foot 10 chain like, Why would you waste your fucking time, you know,”.
