Before his historic Intercontinental Championship win on Raw, John Cena kicked off the show in his hometown of Boston. During his promo, Cena announced that the December 13 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event will feature a series of exhibition matches pitting WWE main roster stars against NXT stars.
John Cena’s Idea
According to Bryan Alvarez, the idea to showcase NXT talent on the main roster show came from John Cena himself. “NXT wrestlers getting matches on SNME was a John Cena call, he loved his time at the WWE Performance Center,” Alvarez writes.
Cena has been public about his appreciation for the developmental system, visiting the Performance Center twice last month. After his second visit, he posted on social media to thank the talent for sharing their perspectives on the business.
“Being coachable can open our minds to learn. Thank you to all the superstars at the WWE PC for sharing with me different perspectives of our business,” Cena wrote. “I spent the week digesting their feedback & was grateful to be able to return today for another chance to learn & share wisdom.”
Cena’s last match will headline the December 13 show in Washington, D.C. He will face the winner of the “Last Time Is Now” tournament, which began on Raw with Rusev and Sheamus advancing in their respective first-round matches.
