AEW Star Wins CMLL World Heavyweight Championship

Claudio Castagnoli Defeats Gran Guerrero To Win CMLL World Heavyweight Championship

AEW star Claudio Castagnoli captured the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship on Friday night, defeating Gran Guerrero at the Viernes Espectacular event in Arena Mexico. The victory marks a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between AEW and CMLL, as Castagnoli ends Guerrero’s historic reign with the promotion’s top prize.

Guerrero had held the championship for over three years prior to the loss, having originally won the title in November 2022. The match concluded when Castagnoli executed a Giant Swing followed by his signature Neutralizer to secure the pinfall victory. This was Castagnoli’s fourth career match for CMLL in Mexico and his first appearance for the promotion since last December.

Tony Khan Reacts

Following the title change, AEW President Tony Khan took to social media to congratulate the new champion and acknowledge the achievement of having an AEW roster member hold the prestigious belt.

“Congratulations to @ClaudioCSRO, the NEW @CMLL_OFICIAL World Heavyweight Champion,” Khan wrote. “On behalf of AEW, we’re very proud to have an @AEW star, especially one of Claudio’s immense stature, as Champion in CMLL! Congratulations to CMLL, I think that Claudio will be a great Champion!”
