Backstage News On WWE’s Plans For Cody Rhodes Vs. Roman Reigns III

WWE is reportedly planning a high-profile rematch between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship, though the bout may not take place on the “Grandest Stage of Them All.” According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the match is in the works following interactions between the two stars at Survivor Series.

Plans For Rhodes Vs. Reigns

Dave Meltzer reported that the tension teased between Rhodes and Reigns at the conclusion of the WarGames match was not accidental. The company has confirmed internal discussions to book the two in a title match, continuing their storied rivalry that anchored WrestleMania 39 and WrestleMania 40.

“The other story was Rhodes and Reigns having words at the end of the match. It’s been confirmed to us that a Rhodes vs. Reigns match for the WWE title is in the plans, although not necessarily at WrestleMania,” Meltzer wrote.

Alternative Matchups Being Considered

While Rhodes vs. Reigns is on the table, the report indicates that WWE is weighing several different combinations for the upcoming Royal Rumble and WrestleMania season. The creative direction appears fluid, with other top names potentially stepping into the title picture or facing “The Tribal Chief.”

“Rollins vs. Breakker, Reigns vs. Punk and Rhodes against someone else could be done,” Meltzer noted. This suggests that a match between Reigns and CM Punk—who were on opposing sides at Survivor Series—is also a strong contender for a marquee spot.

Context Of The Rivalry

Rhodes and Reigns were forced allies at Survivor Series, teaming with CM Punk and The Usos in a losing effort against a team led by Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar. With the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia on January 31 approaching, WWE has a major stadium event prior to WrestleMania that could host the bout.
