Chelsea Green Talks Zack Ryder’s Return: ‘I Knew That Moment Was Going To Come’

Chelsea Green recently discussed the return of her husband, Matt Cardona, to the Zack Ryder persona. Cardona made a surprise appearance to assist Green during a recent WWE event, delighting fans with the revival of his popular “Woo Woo Woo” catchphrase. In a conversation on the Insight With Chris Van Vliet podcast, Green explained the surreal nature of the moment.

‘I kept yapping, running my mouth, telling everyone he was going to return as Matt Cardona, and I had to eat my words when he came back as Zack Ryder. But it was really cool, because I’ve never had a chance to just sit in the crowd and listen to everybody react to Zack Ryder,’ Green said. She noted that while she had seen him perform on the independent scene, she had rarely experienced the full force of the Ryder character in a WWE setting.

The Fear Of The Return Being Cancelled

Green also revealed the anxiety leading up to the surprise, noting that in WWE, nothing is official until it happens. ‘So until I knew that LA Knight was walking to gorilla, I couldn’t get excited, because I have been on the receiving end of many of, ‘Oh, you’re gonna get this.’ ‘No, maybe next week’… So no, I could not get excited,’ she recalled.

A close call with paparazzi almost spoiled the surprise entirely. ‘And the morning of the show, I had Good Day New York, and he came, and then as I’m walking out, TMZ was outside, and he panicked, because it’s like, oh my god, everything’s gonna be blown, and then he’ll never get the moment if TMZ sees him,’ Green shared.

Regarding her unique ring gear featuring her own face, Green admitted she had been saving it for a special occasion. ‘I had that gear sitting waiting for a year. It needed to be the perfect moment, that gear was worthy of a WrestleMania moment, a hometown moment or a championship moment. So I kept it all pristine, all wrapped up, and I was just waiting for that moment,’ she ended.
