Earlier today:

SmackDown GM Nick Aldis went on X to invite Drew McIntyre back.

Backstage:

Nick Aldis told Cody Rhodes that he received a legal letter from Drew’s attorney saying he’s not coming back because this is an unsafe working environment, and is not returning until the issue is resolved. He is now going to go to Drew’s house this week to get this taken care of. Cody rolled up the letter, threw it on the ground, and made his way to the ring.

In the ring:

Cody Rhodes said Drew McIntyre is only half in this and if he was his boss, he would fire him. Since he’s not his boss, he can whoop his ass. NXT Champion Oba Femi’s music played and he made his way into the ring. Oba told Cody he’s worrying about the wrong guy. Drew is not in the house, but I am. Oba said he is the future. He told Cody in the interest of hustle, loyalty, and respect, your time is up, my time is now. Cody said he’s glad they share the fact they both look up to John Cena, but I beat him.

As Cody was leaving the ring, Oba pulled him back by the arm and raised his NXT championship. Cody then raised his WWE championship to end the segment.

Backstage:

Fraxiom told Ilja Dragunov that if #DIY tries anything out there, we will have your back. Dragunov turned them down saying he is going to carry the U.S. title with honor and he will take care of them alone.

United States Championship: Ilja Dragunov (Champion) vs Tommaso Ciampa

Dragunov gave Ciampa two German suplexes and rained down elbows on his head. Ciampa gave Dragunov an Air Raid Crash on the ring apron. Dragunov nailed Ciampa with a dropkick off the top rope. Ciampa gave Dragunov an Air Raid Crash off the top rope for a near fall. Dragunov is bleeding from the nose at this point. They exchanged brutal chops and punches. Dragunov hit Ciampa with the Torpedo Moscow. 

Johnny Gargano came down and got on the ring apron to distract the referee. While this was happening Candice LeRae got on the other side of the ring apron and yanked Dragunov’s neck down on the ring rope. Ciampa hit a running knee to Dragunov’s face for a near fall. Dragunov blocked the Fairy Tale Ending, dropped down on him, and pinned him to retain his championship.

After the match, Gargano and Ciampa stomped away at Dragunov. Carmelo Hayes hit the ring, fended off Gargano and Ciampa, and helped Hayes to his feet.

Winner and still United States Champion: Ilja Dragunov

Pre-taped interview:

John Cena said he signed a 5-year deal to become an ambassador for WWE after his retirement match. He is looking forward to helping the talent and bringing eyes to the product.

Backstage:

JeVon Evans said he’s excited about his match tomorrow on Saturday Night’s Main Event. The Miz interrupted him and said he should be on the show tomorrow, not some kid who wasn’t even born when John Cena debuted in WWE. Evans said if he wants a match with him tonight, just let him know. Miz said he’s going to Nick Aldis to get this match made tonight.

They showed a quick clip of Uncle Howdy who said we’re here.

In the ring:

The Wyatt Sicks entered the ring. Uncle Howdy said if the MFTs want the titles, come and get them. The MFTs appeared on the video wall. Solo said next week, they are coming to take the tag team titles.

Backstage:

Charlotte Flair told Alexa Bliss that after Alexa wins her match tonight, they are going after the tag team titles. Rhea Ripley entered and said IYO SKY and her are next in line for the titles. Alexa told Rhea she respects her, but they’re not stepping aside for anybody,

Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Snoop Dogg, Peyton Manning, Jelly Roll, and Jimmy Fallon sent in video clips wishing John Cena good luck in his match tomorrow.

Alexa Bliss (w/ Charlotte Flair) vs Lash Legend (w/ Nia Jax)

Jax tripped up Alexa while the referee’s back was turned. Charlotte came over and superkicked Jax. Legend kicked Charlotte in the face. Lash blocked a DDT, hit the Lash Extension, and pinned her to win the match.

Winner: Lash Legend

Backstage:

Aleister Black and Zelina were backstage. Black said if Damian Priest wants to drag his friends to hell with him, so be it.

Michael Cole said SmackDown goes to 3 hours on January 2nd.

Je’Von Evans vs The Miz

Miz hit the 5 Knuckle Shuffle on Evans. Evans blocked the AA which sent Miz out of the ring. Evans dove over the top rope on Miz. Evans threw him back in the ring. Evans hit the OG Cutter off the top rope on Miz and pinned him.

Winner: Je’Von Evans

Nia Jax and Lash Legend confronted Rhea Ripley and told her things have changed around here. Ripley asked if that’s a threat and warned them she’s not a problem they want. Ripley told them that when her and IYO want the tag team titles, they’ll take them. They left. Damian Priest entered and told Ripley he’s looking forward to their tag team match tonight. He left. Jade Cargill then stopped and stared at Ripley before continuing walking backstage.

Backstage:

Michin said Jade Cargill has been bullying people and she will defeat her. Cargill attacked Michin and continued walking to the ring.

In the ring:

Cargill said anybody can step up and get stepped on. Michin came down the aisle with a kendo stick and hit Jade with it. When she went for a ladder, Jade kicked Michin in the face. Cargill gave Michin a chokeslam in the ring to end the segment.

Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley vs Aleister Black and Zelina

Priest hit a flatline on Black followed by Broken Arrow for a near fall. Zelina jumped on Priest’s back. He shrugged her off, turned around, and got hit with a German suplex for a near fall. Ripley tagged in. Zelina drove her into the post. All four were now fighting in the ring. Zelina and Black both hit moonsaults off the top rope onto the floor on Priest and Ripley. In the ring, Zelina blocked the Riptide and hit a Code Red for a two-count. Rhea picked Zelina up on her shoulders and drove her down into the mat. Ripley went for the cover but Black broke up the pin attempt. Ripley headbutted Black off the ring apron. Priest and Zelina both hit a Razor’s Edge on their opponents. Ripley hit Zelina with the Riptide and pinned her.

Winners: Damian Priest and Zelina Vega
