WWE Hall of Famer Arn Anderson recently spoke to Denise Salcedo about the evolution of professional wrestling. During the conversation, Anderson offered his take of the modern in-ring style, admitting that the high-risk nature of today’s matches causes him significant concern for the talent involved.
Anderson Fears For The Future Health Of Talent
The wrestling industry has shifted considerably since Anderson’s prime, moving from a psychological approach to a faster-paced style heavily influenced by high-flying maneuvers. Anderson explained that while he holds the current roster in high regard, the lack of control in certain moves keeps him on edge.
“I’m terrified. I respect the girls and guys of today’s wrestling industry, but scared to death too, because I see things in the ring that you can’t protect yourself on,” Anderson said. “Anything going backwards, German Suplex, you can’t protect yourself because you can’t see where you’re going. Stuff off the top, going through tables, things that are dangerous.”
Comparison To His Own Career
The Four Horsemen member reflected on his own physical condition after a decades-long career. He pointed out that despite avoiding the extreme risks common today, he still suffers from the physical toll of the business. Anderson shared his worry that the current generation is accelerating the damage to their bodies in an effort to please the crowd.
“You look at me, I’m beat up, and I didn’t do any of that stuff, so I’m just worried that in five years we’re gonna have a casualty list, and I hate it for the young guys and girls, because they feel like they need to go to that level to get the audience’s approval.”
A Plea To ‘Dial It Down’
Anderson questioned whether the escalation of violence and risk is truly necessary for fans to enjoy the product. He clarified that he does not want to remove excitement from the matches but believes a balance must be struck to ensure the longevity of the performers.
“Do you need them to do that to enjoy their matches? If they dialled it down would you not follow them?” Anderson asked. “I’m not saying take everything away from them, take all the excitement away, but take some of the stuff that talent are time after time getting hurt on and just dial it down, that’s all I’m asking.”
Anderson made a surprise return to WWE programming at SummerSlam in August 2024, where he appeared backstage to offer advice to Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes ahead of his Bloodline Rules match against Solo Sikoa. While he is not currently under a WWE Legends contract, Anderson remains active in the wrestling community through appearances and his podcast, ARN.
