Velvet Sky has opened up about the reason she was never signed to a WWE contract during the height of her popularity. Despite being a featured act in TNA, Sky never had a run in WWE. In a recent social media interaction, she alleged that her exclusion from the roster was due to the personal preferences of former Head of Talent, John Laurinaitis.
Responding to a fan on Twitter who expressed surprise that WWE never signed her, Sky disclosed that her personal life was the primary obstacle. At the time she was being considered, Sky was in a long-term relationship with a current WWE Superstar.
According to Sky, this did not sit well with Laurinaitis. “John Laurinaitis didn’t want HIS divas dating within the company,” Sky shared. She was in a long relationship with Bully Ray from 2016-2021.
Sky noted that she was essentially given an ultimatum, or at least faced with a clear barrier: the job or the relationship. She was passed on because she “refused to let work end her relationship.”
Despite the rejection, Sky holds no bitterness regarding how her career unfolded. By not going to WWE, she became a cornerstone of TNA’s Knockouts division. As a member of The Beautiful People alongside Angelina Love, she helped define an era of women’s wrestling. She is a two-time Knockouts Champion, a former Knockouts Tag Team Champion, and was inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame.
Her full tweet read, “The reason I didn’t get signed, per right from Johnny Ace’s mouth at our meeting at headquarters when I was told prior to the meeting that I was gonna be signed, was because I was in a long term relationship with one of the talent who worked there at the time, and I was told by Ace that he “didn’t want HIS divas dating within the company.” I chose loyalty to my long term man at the time and got passed up because I wasn’t single. 🥴 Oh well. I had a helluva career at TNA and wouldn’t have changed it for anything.”
Sky did technically appear on WWE television, though never as a contracted wrestler. She had a handful of cameo appearances as an extra. In February 2005, she appeared on an episode of SmackDown as a guest during a “Celebration of Excellence” party hosted by John “Bradshaw” Layfield. Nearly a year later, in January 2006, she and fellow future star Trinity were planted in the crowd on an episode of WWE Heat, where they were chosen to dance with The Heart Throbs.
