There was some grumbling from people in the company over the fact that WWE chose to cut people from the roster as a way to cut down on costs because of the WWE Network. Some of the wrestlers noted frustration over how some people were released yesterday but the company didn’t choose to cut CM Punk. Punk has stated that he’s now retired and it doesn’t look like he has any plans to return to the company.
It was noted to me that CM Punk’s deal pays him more in one year than what some undercard guys would make in 4 or 5 years. As noted in the reent Wrestling Observer newsletter, WWE may opt to rollover Punk’s contract in July as a way of preventing him from working anywhere else. That would mean that Punk still would get paid his downside guarantee while sitting at home even though WWE is under pressure to cut costs to keep their stockholders happy.
