AEW made its debut in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday with AEW Grand Slam Australia at the Qudos Bank Arena. The event featured multiple championship defenses and a match to determine the next challenger for the AEW World Championship.
In the main event, MJF successfully defended the AEW World Championship against Brody King. The match was preceded by a vocal crowd reaction, as fans in Sydney broke out into an anti-ICE chant during the in-ring introductions. Despite the physical challenge from King, MJF managed to retain his title, continuing his reign at the top of the promotion.
Revolution Title Match Official
Earlier in the broadcast, “Hangman” Adam Page defeated Andrade El Idolo to become the number one contender for the AEW World Championship. Following MJF’s victory in the main event, Page confronted the champion and signed a contract to officially set up their match for AEW Revolution. The pay-per-view is scheduled for March 15 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The TNT Championship was also on the line as Kyle Fletcher defended his title against Mark Briscoe in a ladder match. Fletcher secured the win in his home country and later debuted a customized version of the championship featuring a pink strap. Fletcher had regained the title just days prior by defeating Tommaso Ciampa on Dynamite.
Shaved Bald and New Allegiances
One of the most talked-about moments of the night involved a Mixed Tornado Tag match between the team of Orange Cassidy and Toni Storm and the Death Riders’ Marina Shafir and Wheeler Yuta. Per the match stipulation, the individual who took the fall was required to have their head shaved. Storm pinned Yuta, and despite Yuta’s attempt to leave the ring, Jon Moxley forced him back to undergo the haircut.
The AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships remained with the Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameron & Willow Nightingale) after they defeated MegaBad (Penelope Ford & Megan Bayne). However, the celebration was interrupted by the debut of Lena Kross. Kross blindsided the champions and aligned herself with Ford and Bayne, establishing a new threat in the division.
Continental Championship Draw
The AEW Continental Championship match between Jon Moxley and Konosuke Takeshita ended in a time-limit draw. Both men fought for the full duration of the contest without a winner being determined, allowing Moxley to remain the champion.
