It turns out that AEW had different plans for Cody Rhodes on next week’s episode of Dynamite.
It was announced earlier this week that Rhodes will make his next defense of the AEW TNT Title against Marq Quen on the show. However, Quen wasn’t the original opponent for Rhodes.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Fenix was in line for a title shot and supposed to face Rhodes next week.
However, due to an ankle injury that Fenix suffered on the go-home edition of Dynamite for Double or Nothing a few weeks ago, he’s still not ready for in-ring action. This injury also led to his removal from the Casino Ladder Match at Double or Nothing.
Meltzer reported and AEW President Tony Khan later confirmed that when the show was taped last Tuesday, there were references made to indicate that Fenix would be next in line for the title shot.
When AEW officials got word that Fenix wasn’t ready to wrestle, the promotion had to edit those references out. Unfortunately, one reference didn’t get removed and fans picked up on it.
Khan offered some additional details on this slip through Twitter:
We worked hard in post, I thought we’d caught everything, the mention of Fenix slipped by a few of us in the final pass after a long week, + we thought we had the Fyter time correct, it was right on TSN I guess but not on TNT, we caught it today but didn’t get it changed in time.
