All Elite Wrestling VP Cody Rhodes was recently interviewed by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Live to talk about several topics related to AEW. During the interview, Rhodes was asked about AEW possibly adding a third hour to AEW Dynamite.
Rhodes said that AEW president Tony Khan actually had an idea to create another show that would showcase the up and coming talent AEW has to offer.
“I hope I’m not speaking out of turn here, cause it’s more Tony’s job to tell you this, but Tony had some great ideas at one point about a show for the younger guys and girls, kind of the up and coming guys and girls. And I thought it was a dynamite idea, no pun intended. So I could see us going that route. But again, we’re gonna wait until they come to us with some ideas.
“Where it could be, for one, and you know, I think the initial talk was ‘oh, it’ll be like Dark but on another channel,’ I don’t think it’ll be like Dark. I think it’s gonna be its own animal and we would want that. We want to test ourselves.
“And this is the test for us, so, I think it’ll be something different and maybe, I don’t mean that as a hint, maybe we will go the route of the young, less seen – cause we have a lot, it’s hard. Our roster is pretty full and two hours a week, it’s not possible to put everybody on. Not everybody plays. And it’s hard to keep morale.
“Not morale, but it’s hard to kind of hard to check in with everybody when you don’t see them every week. I want to see everybody every week. I like having my team.”
Rhodes was then asked about AEW potentially adding a secondary title, or “mid-card title” as some fans like to call it. Cody says he hates the term mid-card, but didn’t rule out the possibility for 2020.
“Again, you got to talk to Tony. It’s an idea that’s obviously on the table – but again, what do you do first? I’m just kind of throwing this out there for fans to put in their minds. What do you do first? Do you to a Women’s Tag Title first? Or do you do a title that’s not unlike the Television Title? These are real questions.
“I think we have an idea that’s different than anything that’s been done, and I would just hope that everybody remains patient and they’re kind of yearning, they’re lust for that type of belt, championship, I think will be satiated in 2020.
“Again, I’m not saying there’s a mid-card title, because if I was to say there’s a mid-card title coming to AEW, Nick Jackson would superkick my skull clean off my head because we’re moving slow and it’s something that as EVPs we all have to agree on, but there is a really great idea, it would make all the sense in the world.
“We have a ton of talent and certain talent are breaching the tier one role. It’s like, okay there was the elite in Chris Jericho, and then there was Jon Moxley, and then there was kind of the drop off, and the drop off isn’t there anymore. There are people who are shooting up at the speed that we’re trying to keep our hands on them and you can’t sometimes, you got to let them fly. So yeah, there’s a great idea out there.
“Hopefully, something that can maybe come along with the third-hour news that kind of becomes more prominent. “
