ROH Women’s World Champion Athena recently spoke with WFAA 8 in Texas about a potential all-women’s event in AEW. The concept, similar to WWE’s Evolution Premium Live Event, is something she confirmed has been on the mind of the AEW President.
“Absolutely. I know TK has absolutely thought about that, it’s just about timing when it comes to those things,” Athena said. “We have the best roster in the world. I know everybody says it, but we actually do have the best roster in the world. I do know that is on his brain, it’s been on his brain since I have been in AEW at least. It’s just about timing.”
Athena, who is the longest-reigning ROH Women’s Champion in history, has been a dominant force across both the AEW and ROH women’s rosters throughout 2025. The division is not only headed for its first-ever Blood & Guts match later this fall, but it is also in the process of introducing the new AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship. An eight-team tournament is set to begin on the October 29 episode of AEW Dynamite to crown the inaugural champions.
The tournament field includes Athena teaming with the longest-reigning AEW TBS Champion, Mercedes Moné. The other teams announced are Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron, Sky Blue and Julia Hart, “Timeless” Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa, Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford, Jamie Hayter and Queen Aminata, Tay Melo and Anna Jay, along with Alex Windsor and Riho. This marks the second women’s tag tournament in AEW history, following The Deadly Draw Tournament in 2020.
A separate program is also brewing between AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander and TBS Champion Mercedes Mone. Statlander, who defeated Storm for her title at AEW All Out, recently attacked Mone and protected Harley Cameron during an episode of AEW Dynamite, setting up their match.
The AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship tournament is scheduled to begin on the upcoming October 29 episode of “Fright Night Dynamite” in Edinburg, Texas. The full bracket was revealed this past Wednesday, with first-round matches announced: Jamie Hayter & Queen Aminata vs. Julia Hart & Skye Blue; Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron vs. Mercedes Moné & Athena; “Timeless” Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa vs. Alex Windsor & Riho; and Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford vs. Tay Melo & Anna Jay. In addition, Kris Statlander and Mercedes Moné are now scheduled to face each other for the AEW Women’s World Championship at the Full Gear event on November 22.
