This week, news broke that AEW had kept another star under contract, which comes at a time when the company continues to keep talent under contract and bring in new stars.
That star is Buddy Matthews, who has aligned himself with Malakai Black and Brody King in House of Black since signing with AEW. He first made a name for himself in WWE as Buddy Murphy, where he held the Raw, NXT Tag Team, and Cruiserweight titles before his departure in June 2021.
He worked for MLW and NJPW before joining AEW in February 2022. Together, they’ve found success, including holding the Trios titles once. There had been speculation that Matthews may return to WWE once his AEW deal is up, as he is dating Rhea Ripley.
However, that is not the case. Ibou of WrestlePurists first reported that the Australian had re-signed with AEW. No other details were given.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the deal was agreed to months ago and Tony Khan offered him a new very lucrative deal and he agreed to it after Matthews had tried to give notice at one point as the company wasn’t going to release anyone to go to WWE.
The AEW star has yet to comment on his contract status publicly.
