AEW officially announced on Wednesday night there would be a women’s tag team tournament taking place this summer.
The AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup Tournament: The Deadly Draw was confirmed, but not a ton of details were provided at the time of the announcement.
What AEW did confirm is the fact that it features all of the top women wrestlers in the company as there will be 16 women and 8 teams competing in the tournament.
Dave Meltzer reported on today’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that the idea is to hold a women’s division tournament each summer, but there is a catch as future plans for the tournament will depend on the ratings success of The Deadly Draw.
Thus, if fans tune in and watch the tournament then it will continue every year. There’s only been one team confirmed for the tournament, which is The Nightmare Sisters – Allie and Brandi Rhodes.
Although not confirmed, it’s possible that AEW will have to reach out to talent that is not under contract with the promotion to fill out the teams as there are some members of the AEW women’s roster who are not available right now due to travel-related restrictions thanks to the coronavirus.
