Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite from the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago ended with major developments in the AEW World Championship picture. There was a heated confrontation between MJF and Mark Briscoe and closed with a challenge being laid out for a massive World Title match on next week’s broadcast.
MJF and Mark Briscoe’s War of Words
The second hour featured MJF, the winner of the Casino Gauntlet match at All In: Texas, making his way to the ring. He addressed the new AEW World Champion, “Hangman” Adam Page, calling him a “hypocrite” and vowing to beat him fair and square for the title, stating he doesn’t even need the contract he earned.
His promo was cut short by the arrival of Mark Briscoe, who MJF stole the Casino Gauntlet victory from. “Much like MJF’s kosher pickle, I’ll keep this short,” Briscoe began. “MJF stole that Casino Gauntlet win from him at All In, as he wants him in the ring next week in Chicago.”
MJF flatly rejected the challenge. “No,” he said, before mocking Briscoe. “If he was supposed to win the Gauntlet, he would’ve but he always chokes when the pressure is on. MJF is a generational talent, the most complete pro wrestler in the world today and from the bottom of his heart, Briscoe sucks as does everyone from the M-M-Mid-West.”
MJF continued his verbal assault, claiming the fans don’t truly respect Briscoe. “MJF isn’t stupid, he knows everyone loves Mark Briscoe… Briscoe has a missing tooth, wonky eye, Southern accent that makes everyone warm and fuzzy,” he said. “But not even Briscoe’s biggest fans think he’s a top guy or anywhere near MJF’s level… Briscoe is the circus clown they parade around for cheap laughs and pops. The fans don’t respect him.”
He then made the confrontation deeply personal by bringing up Mark’s late brother, Jay Briscoe. “He knew a guy from Delaware that the fans did appreciate, that guy would’ve been worth his time,” MJF said. “How depressing it must be for Briscoe to wake up every morning looking his family and friends in the eye knowing they respected his brother Jay more.” The deeply insulting comment prompted Briscoe to charge the ring, but MJF retreated to the back.
Briscoe Gets a Main Event Victory
In the main event of the evening, Mark Briscoe faced off against The Death Riders’ Claudio Castagnoli. The hard-hitting match saw both men trade heavy blows. A key moment occurred when Darby Allin appeared in the crowd, momentarily distracting Castagnoli and allowing Briscoe to fire up. After a series of back-and-forth near falls, Briscoe managed to counter Castagnoli’s Neutralizer attempt into an inside cradle for a flash pinfall victory.
World Title Match Set for Next Week
Briscoe’s celebration was cut short as he was immediately attacked by The Death Riders. Marina Shafir hit the ring for a chop block, followed by Jon Moxley and Wheeler Yuta. The trio beat down Briscoe, with Castagnoli slamming him onto a steel chair. Moxley took the microphone and said that the new champion, Hangman Page, isn’t truly the World Champion yet.
This brought out “Hangman” Adam Page, who power-walked to the ring to confront his rival. “When Moxley said Page didn’t want Texas Death, they both know that wasn’t true,” Page declared. “When Moxley said Page wouldn’t do it again and again, he might believe that, so Page will prove it to him.”
Page then laid out a massive challenge for next week’s episode of Dynamite. “Next week, Hangman vs. Mox for the World Championship, but this time, Moxley is the challenger, so he’ll play by Page’s rules. Everyone but a referee banned from ringside,” Page announced. “Page already knows Moxley’s answer is yes, so he’ll see you next week, dumbass.” The show ended with the graphic confirming the main event for next week’s show.
