AEW’s Jeff Jarrett Compares Shedeur Sanders’ NFL Draft Slide To Gable Steveson’s WWE Stint

Discussing the recent NFL Draft on his “My World” podcast, Jeff Jarrett drew an interesting comparison between the draft experience of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the pro wrestling attempt of Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson. Host Conrad Thompson asked for a wrestling equivalent to the intense scrutiny and eventual draft slide Sanders faced despite high expectations, largely fueled by his father Deion Sanders’ outspoken promotion. Jarrett immediately thought of Steveson.

“Who came to my mind? Who’s the comparable? Basically, a can’t miss prospect that, just by all accounts… sliding to the 144th pick…?” Jarrett began. “I think Gable Steveson is the number one draft choice on every board, on every metric… a guy that’s going to go into our business, and that is a can’t miss.” Jarrett highlighted Steveson’s incredible amateur wrestling credentials (multiple NCAA titles, Hodge Trophies, Olympic gold) which created immense hype for his transition to WWE.

However, Jarrett pointed out the difference between amateur success and pro wrestling success. “And we all kind of know the result of that,” Jarrett continued, referencing Steveson’s WWE run. “Not only did he not last… it was kind of in record time, and a few different things that he did appear on, he laid an egg. So the business just it wasn’t for him.” Jarrett used this comparison to illustrate how immense hype and amateur accolades don’t always guarantee success in the unique world of sports entertainment.

Jarrett contrasted Steveson’s outcome with other successful amateur wrestlers like the Steiner Brothers and Kurt Angle, noting Steveson’s situation “makes you appreciate” those who successfully made the transition. While wishing Shedeur Sanders well in the NFL, Jarrett felt the Steveson comparison was “a pretty good analogy as far as Draft Day” expectations versus the difficult reality of translating potential into professional success under immense pressure.

Jarrett made this comparison on his My World podcast, available weekly on major podcast platforms.
