Backstage Details Behind Chris Jericho’s Surprise GCW Appearance

Chris Jericho showed up at the GCW Highest In The Room 3 event to attack Matt Cardona and EFFY on Saturday night during their match.

A hooded individual got in the ring and took out Cardona with a baseball bat. This led to EFFY pinning Cardona to win the match, only to be attacked by the mystery man. Jericho revealed his identity and was seen wearing an AEW shirt.

EFFY was filling in for AEW’s Ricky Starks, who AEW pulled from his match against Cardona. The reason for him being pulled was due to the comments made by EFFY about AEW and Tony Khan’s father.

The angle was shot to build the match between Jericho and Cardona further for the ROH World Heavyweight Title on Friday at Final Battle. Dave Meltzer noted in his Wrestling Observer Daily Update that Jericho’s appearance was not detailed.

Meltzer wrote, “The Chris Jericho deal last night at the GCW show in Los Angeles was not a detailed thing. Basically Jericho was in Los Angeles last night already for Kuarantine at the Whisky and GCW was there and Jericho figured he could shoot an angle with Matt Cardona.  GCW wasn’t going to have any problem with a surprise appearance of Jericho on their show and laying out Effy just made sense for all concerned.”
