The “Very Nice, Very Evil” era of AEW has officially come to an end. According to a report from FightfulSelect.com, Danhausen’s contract with the promotion has expired, making him a free agent as of February 28, 2026.
Danhausen’s tenure with AEW was described as a “puzzling run,” marked by injury setbacks but also long stretches where he was not booked despite being healthy. While AEW initially picked up his option year and extended his deal to account for injury time, FightfulSelect.com had previously reported that Danhausen requested his option not be picked up. His desire to leave was reportedly rooted in a wish to no longer have to clear independent wrestling dates and merchandising opportunities with AEW management.
The timing of his free agency has immediately fueled speculation regarding tonight’s Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event in Chicago. For weeks, WWE has featured a human-sized “mystery crate” on television, with instructions that it must be opened at tonight’s event. While FightfulSelect.com has not confirmed his presence at the United Center, they noted that he would “theoretically be available” to be inside the crate tonight.
The latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that while Danhausen may not be the traditional “top star” type for Paul “Triple H” Levesque, his ability to sell merchandise and connect as a cult figure makes him a prime candidate for a WWE look. Dave Meltzer wrote at F4wonline.com, “I expected discussion regarding him and that in the end they’d give him a try.”
Danhausen has reportedly had people within WWE pushing for his arrival. He has yet to comment on his departure.
