Backstage News On Danhausen’s AEW Departure

The long-running mystery of the shipping crate that appeared on WWE TV has finally been solved. At Elimination Chamber 2026 in Chicago, Danhausen made his official debut, emerging from a box with an entourage of dancers painted in his likeness. The former AEW star’s arrival has immediately sparked conversation both among fans and within the company.

According to a report from Fightful Select, Danhausen’s contract with AEW expired on February 28, 2026, the same day as the WWE premium live event. While Danhausen had requested that AEW not pick up his option or extend his deal due to injury time, the extension occurred anyway. Once his contract officially concluded, he was free to negotiate with WWE, and sources indicate there were no significant issues during the process.

WWE has reportedly been interested in bringing Danhausen into the fold for some time. The plan was always for him to utilize his established name and gimmick, though there were minor pitches for potential changes. However, the reception to his debut at Elimination Chamber has been described as mixed. Reports from Wrestling Observer indicate that bringing him in was not a “unanimous decision” among management.

“Wrestling Observer reported that Danhausen coming to WWE was not a ‘unanimous decision,’ but that’s usually the case with many talent. Regarding his reaction at Elimination Chamber, one WWE source wondered why the company would debut him with hype in a box after the ‘if it comes out of a box’ joke has been made for years on end during Bruce Prichard podcasts.”

Despite the divided internal reaction, WWE is expected to utilize Danhausen across multiple platforms. This may include appearances on various brands and even working with AAA when necessary. The company is also expected to leverage his success on the independent circuit and convention scene, with some viewing his role as a brand ambassador for the company.

“Those in the company we spoke to said that they expect he will be utilized across a number of brands, including AAA when necessary. He’s expected to be on WWE Raw this week. Danhausen is expected to be pulled from upcoming independent dates and conventions by those running them.”
