AEW will be running a house show at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, FL on April 9. AEW President Tony Khan announced the news before Wednesday’s Dynamite went live on TNT.
Clearly, the show will take place during WrestleMania weekend so this is a chance for fans attending to also drive down to Jacksonville from Tampa, which is about a 3-hour trip, to check out AEW. No other details were given.
During today’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer brought up how it gives fans an opportunity to attend a live show since WWE won’t be airing SmackDown live that night and even if they did then fans couldn’t attend.
Also, another aspect of this is for the younger wrestlers to have the opportunity to work matches in front of people as usually when AEW tapes Dark and Dark: Elevation, there are little to no fans in attendance.
“I mean obviously the idea is that it’s WrestleMania week and Jacksonville is about 3 and half hours from Tampa. It’s not that close, but the idea is that there is no Friday night show because SmackDown is being taped ahead of time, and even if it was, fans aren’t allowed in anyway. The idea is that there are going to be all these fans, in theory, and it’s a Friday night, that’s the idea.
They’re gonna try a house show and I guess the idea is to give you a hell of a show. I don’t know who is wrestling yet. Part of it is also they have so many people there who have not worked in front of fans very often, some of the newer people. A lot of the people who work on the Monday and Tuesday show, there is no fans.”
Meltzer noted Wednesday’s Dynamite had 850 fans in attendance.
