Backstage News On What’s Going On Between Rey Fenix And AEW

The relationship between AEW and high-flying star Rey Fenix appears to be increasingly strained following a series of cryptic tweets from Fenix alleging “inhumane treatment” and a denial of medical care by the company.

As previously noted, Fenix took to social media with claims that he was treated poorly and denied access to a doctor when needed, though he did not directly name AEW in his posts. AEW has declined to comment on the situation, citing a policy against commenting on medical claims.

Fightful Select’s sources within AEW expressed surprise at Fenix’s public statements, with one source acknowledging communication issues but denying knowledge of any “inhumane” treatment. However, another source refuted Fenix’s claims entirely, suggesting they were an attempt to portray himself favorably amidst rumors of the Lucha Bros negotiating with WWE.

It was previously reported that both Fenix and his brother Penta El Zero Miedo had engaged in talks with WWE while still under contract with AEW. While Penta is now a free agent, Fenix’s contract, extended due to injury time, runs into 2025. Despite the rumors, WWE has not publicly commented on any potential interest in the Lucha Bros.

Fightful Select indicates that AEW was aware of the alleged WWE talks as early as last summer and was unhappy about the situation. This revelation casts doubt on previous reports that AEW was unconcerned about the rumors.

Penta is reportedly in high demand from various wrestling promotions, and Fenix, despite his contractual obligations, is also attracting significant interest. Fightful Select is currently investigating whether AEW approved Fenix’s upcoming appearance at HOG wrestling.

The Lucha Bros were reportedly a key part of AEW’s creative plans throughout the year. They were initially slated to win the AEW Trios Championships at All In alongside PAC, but those plans were allegedly scrapped after news of their WWE discussions surfaced.

While some within AEW suggested last week that Tony Khan might grant Fenix an early release from his contract, there have been no further updates, and the situation remains unresolved. One source emphasized that any outcome in this case could set an “unfortunate precedent” for AEW.
