Backstage news on WWE’s plan to fight AEW on Wednesday night

It’s going to be interesting to see what changes are made to NXT if WWE is able to work out a deal to air the show on Fox Sports 1 on Wednesday nights.

As previously noted, NXT came up in a FOX meeting last week and the idea to move the show to FS1 is to counterprogram All Elite Wrestling’s weekly TV show on TNT. AEW has not yet announced which day of the week their show will air but they recently filed for the “Wednesday Night Dynamite” trademark so that seems like the most likely night.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Vince McMahon would absolutely be upset if NXT ratings did not beat AEW so that means that they will be using every trick in the book to make sure ratings are up for that show.

Meltzer added, “As far as competition goes … absolutely the plan is to use main roster guys. If this show goes to head with AEW is to use main roster guys on the NXT show to help boost the ratings.”

So yes, in theory, we could see someone like Braun Strowman or Seth Rollins on NXT.

There’s still a lot of questions to be answered. Will FS1 allow NXT to go 2 hours from 8-10 pm? Will NXT go live every week? Will NXT go on the road every week like AEW? The big question is how this affects the brand overall and does this show end up being produced similar to Raw and SmackDown if Vince McMahon decides to get hands-on?

AEW plans to announce more details on their TNT show soon. Last week during the AEW Fight For The Fallen post-show media scrum, Tony Khan said that an announcement would be coming before the All Out pay-per-view. Click below to hear what he said about AEW on TNT.
