An update has been provided on AEW wrestler Matt Sydal, who has not been featured on AEW programming since May 2024. Sydal’s last match took place in July of this year, where he faced Ultimo Dragon at a festival in France.
Reason For Absence
According to Sean Ross Sapp in the latest Fightful Select Answers Q&A, a representative for AEW confirmed that Sydal is still currently under contract with the company. Sydal’s absence is reportedly due to a significant injury. According to the report, Sydal underwent ankle surgery last year to correct an issue that he has needed to get done for over a decade.
AEW Career
Matt Sydal, a former WWE Tag Team Champion, officially signed with AEW in November 2020 after debuting in the Casino Battle Royale at AEW All Out 2020. His last match for the promotion was a loss to Konosuke Takeshita on AEW Dynamite.
During his career, Sydal has also competed for ROH, NJPW, and TNA. His championship history includes the ROH Tag Team Titles, the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Titles twice with Ricochet, the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Titles, and the TNA X-Division Championship.
While Sydal continues to recover, his last AEW opponent, Konosuke Takeshita, has seen his own star rise. Takeshita, the current AEW International Champion, is scheduled to defend his title in a rematch against Zack Sabre Jr. at the upcoming AEW Full Gear Premium Live Event on November 23.
