WWE Hall of Famer and co-host of SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio Bully Ray recently discussed the latest edition of the ‘Wednesday Night Wars’ between NXT and AEW. Bully would specifically discuss the main event segments between the two shows. AEW saw the face-to-face confrontation between Chris Jericho and Matt Hardy, whereas NXT saw Triple H speak to Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa.
“I loved Jericho and Matt Hardy not using a microphone” Bully Ray began. “The cameras just picking up what they were doing. The camera was the fly on the wall in the conversation between Chris and Matt, the camera was the fly on the wall while Jericho is, you know, drunkenly talking to a drone, which is hysterical. So it worked. And I liked it, it was so different.”
Bully would elaborate further, discussing how he used to approach ‘no microphone’ promos at house shows. “When I was cutting promos, and I would do this more at live events or house shows, I would not use a microphone. I would let my voice carry, so it would be different. Not using the microphone is different, so that’s why I appreciate what Chris and Matt are trying to do.”
Ray would then move onto talking about the NXT main event segment. “Then I’m watching Gargano, Ciampa and Hunter, and I’m like ‘wow, this is an intimate conversation. This intimate conversation doesn’t need a microphone at all.’ In the WWE you’re never supposed to play to the camera, everything uis fly on the wall, where the camera is kind of catching what goes on in the WWE Universe. If Hunter was out there with a microphone at first? I don’t think I would have necessarily minded, but he didn’t need it, none of them needed it.”
Bully Ray finished by offering his own take on how he would’ve approached the segment. “If the camera man jumped right up onto the apron? And Hunter just said right into the camera, ‘this been going on long enough, blah blah blah I know how this is me and Shawn [Michaels] went through it.’ It’s kind of like Hunter could have told the story to the people at home and said ‘hey guys let me let you in on a little secret. I totally get what’s going on between these two guys because me and my buddy had been through before.’ Then here comes Gargano without the microphone. Gargano could have just been yelling and screaming. And then that whole conversation could have taken place. And we could have just been sitting back and felt like ‘Wow, I’ve seen something here that maybe I wasn’t supposed to see.’ I mean we know that it’s on TV that we’re supposed to see it, but by not having the microphone, it would have given me this feeling of like maybe these guys were in a closed room backstage.”
