WWE wanted to build up a lot of interest in this year’s Royal Rumble event so they decided to announce several returning stars for the Women’s Royal Rumble Match, which included Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion Mickie James.
Once this happened, there had been a lot of talk about the “forbidden door” possibly being opened between WWE and AEW, which never seemed likely considering the way WWE has tried to stop the growth of the rival promotion in the past.
Nonetheless, throughout Royal Rumble week, there were some false rumors about CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, and Jon Moxley being in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match.
Punk had fun on social media by trolling fans with old photos of him at the airport. Punk spoke with Abe Kanan of Chicago’s Rock 95.5 Radio Show about this:
“Listen, from my perspective, when I left, that’s what it was every year. This is the first year they had the Royal Rumble that I have been back in wrestling. I work somewhere else, and people were still making s**t up and saying I was going to be in the Rumble or Cody [Rhodes] was going to be in the Rumble or [Jon] Moxley was going to be in the Rumble.
I get it, people want to be excited about it, but if you want to watch us, watch AEW. That’s what Twitter is for, it’s a cesspool and garbage and I want to delete it off my phone, but every once in a while it’s a ray of sunshine and fun stuff.”
