CM Punk is not sure if adding another Women’s Title or Trios Title is a good idea, Tony Khan on AEW possibly running MSG

Tony Khan and CM Punk appeared on “My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox” to promote tonight’s AEW Rampage and tomorrow night’s AEW Dynamite from Miami, Florida.

Here are some highlights:

Tony Khan was asked if what’s happening in wrestling today is similar to what happened to WCW in 1996 in terms of picking up big name free agents:

“WCW started to get a lot of traction in ‘94 when Hulk Hogan and then Randy Savage later that year came over.  WCW already built a nice foundation of stars.  Then Nitro happened in ‘95.  I think what’s happening right now in many ways is similar because in ‘96, there was a huge wave of free agency again.  Even though not every business metric turned, you saw big growth for WCW and it continued and continued.  I think, had they not made some mistakes, but also, they did a lot of great things along the way that nobody else had ever done, and still nobody’s done in the history of the wrestling business. You can’t take those contributions lightly, but I think they would have had a much better chance to sustain, succeed, and be around a long time had they not burned through a lot of the matches which is something that I’m very conscious of and it’s why I really have a really deep roster.  There are different matches that are exciting to the fans each week, but know that we’re not going to burn through every combination of matches.  First of all, we have maybe more young stars that we developed.  I think one of the mistakes WCW made in hindsight was they never got to see through the growth of their young stars.  Even if the company had stayed in business, Chris Jericho was gone.  Eddie Guerrero was gone.  Can you imagine, for me, I think the young equivalent of those people say MJF, Darby Allin, Britt Baker, Jungle Boy, these people are really important and they’re part of AEW long term both in my plans and literally under contract.”

Khan was asked if he wants to run Madison Square Garden:

“It appealed to me at one point.  Now I have Arthur Ashe.  I think it’s one of the homes, and certainly in New York City, it’s the home of AEW.  They have great things in the market and in the area, but really, New York is a bunch of markets.”

CM Punk was asked if AJ Mendez’s signing with WOW as executive producer was because they now both now have a rekindling of the love for wrestling:

“I don’t want to put words in her mouth, but I think that’s just a happy coincidence.  I had somebody reach out to me saying, ‘Hey, Jeanie Buss wants to talk to April.’  April doesn’t know anything about sports, like nothing.  I took the idea to her and I said, ‘You have to at least take this meeting.  Jeanie Buss is the most powerful woman in sports.’  In my mind, I was doing cartwheels thinking of my wife talking to Jeanie Buss.  I thought that was super cool.  They had a great conversation.  Jeanie was just kind of kickstarting WOW.  It really fits into the stuff that April is doing which is writing and producing. It really was just an idea presented to her that I think opened her up to, ‘Oh yea, this is actually perfect.  I can help the next generation of female wrestlers with the creative side of stuff, and I don’t have to get concussed.’  It’s excellent.  It really fits what she’s doing in her wheelhouse, and I’m super stoked she’s doing it.”

Punk said he is not sure if having a second women’s title or trios title is a good idea:

“I think if everybody has a title and everybody’s a champion, then nobody’s a champion. I think you have to be really careful with that. I think a TBS title is even pushing it. There’s already a women’s title. Do we have the depth in the women’s division? Do we have the depth in the men’s division to have a secondary title?  I think we’ve been doing pretty good so far. Miro brought a lot of credibility to that belt and stabilized it. Obviously, Kenny Omega is the AEW Champion.  It’s kind of a touchy subject.  I know in 2021, everybody wants to really extol the virtues of women’s wrestling.  This isn’t a knock.  I married a women’s wrestler.  I just wonder if we have the personnel to support a secondary, or a title that’s on even footing, with the women’s title.  With trios, it’s the same thing.  Yea, there’s a lot of stables that have three people.  Yea, you can have me tag with Sting and Darby, but again, if everybody’s a champion, then nobody’s a champion.  There needs to be, in my opinion, less titles, but we’ll see how it goes.  I’m sure all of the women will prove me wrong and I’m ok with that.”
