CM Punk recalls his conversation with Tony Khan when AEW first started

CM Punk made an appearance on the Sunday Night’s Main Event podcast to promote the Heels series that premieres this Sunday night on Starz.

Although there has been a lot of speculation that Punk could be headed to AEW after an initial report that the former WWE Champion had been in talks about an in-ring return, there’s been no confirmation that he’s signed with AEW.

During it, Punk was asked about his conversation with AEW President Tony Khan when All Elite Wrestling first launched in 2019 about whether he would be interested in joining the promotion.

“Yeah, I talked to Tony. My perspective on this and I said this to Tony, to his face. I am the guy who has constantly heard, ‘hey I got a money guy, hey I got TV.’ I’ve heard that at least once or twice a year for 15-20 years in my wrestling career. I’ve gotten bounced checks from those gentlemen. You watched it happen, especially after ECW folded,  it was everybody was restarting ECW. Everybody was going to use the ECW guys. There was a dude named John Collins who did time in prison for bouncing checks.

It always seems like somebody is…’oh we’re going to start a start-up and we’re going to compete with Vince.’ I always thought that came from a bad spot because if you want to start a pro wrestling company I think you should always focus on yourself. So I more or less took a wait-and-see approach. I wasn’t nor am I not interested in pro wrestling in that respect.”

Punk added that he’s focused on being an actor just like he was focused on being a wrestler. He wants to be the best actor he can be.

In this same interview, he was asked about Darby Allin’s best in the world promo and if he’ll be at AEW Rampage in Chicago. You can watch the entire interview by clicking on the player below (quotes can be found at the 8:27 mark):
