Cody Rhodes Talks AEW Departure: ‘I Wouldn’t Stand For’ Being Disrespected

In a preview clip for an upcoming podcast appearance, former Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes has given his most candid comments to date on why he departed from AEW, the company he helped found, in 2022.

‘Feeling Disrespected’ Led To AEW Departure

Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rhodes explained that while there is still “respect and love” for his previous promotion, there is also “clearly bad blood.” He stated that feeling disrespected in a company he helped build was something he “wouldn’t stand for.”

“Feeling disrespected at something I built with my friends…that we built, feeling disrespected there…I wouldn’t stand for it,” he said. “I did way more here than you think and you’re going to find out the moment I’m out the door.”

‘The Greatest Revenge On Earth Is Success’

Rhodes elaborated on his mindset at the time, stating his belief that proving his worth was the ultimate goal. “The greatest revenge on Earth is success,” he said. “We’re sitting on something magic and if I’m not doing to do it in the house I literally with Matt (Jackson), Kenny (Omega) and Nick (Jackson) built? Then, buddy, I’m going elsewhere.”

Rhodes’ comments come as he is at the pinnacle of the wrestling world. After leaving AEW and returning to WWE, he has become the company’s top babyface and is the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion. This Sunday at SummerSlam, he will compete in one of the biggest matches of his career, challenging for the WWE title against John Cena in a Street Fight.
